The first national survey of Sri Lanka’s wild elephants found more than had been estimated — a sign the endangered species has a healthy, growing population on the Indian Ocean island.
The count conducted last month in forests and wildlife parks found 5,879 wild elephants, of which 122 are tuskers and 1,107 calves, Wildlife Minister S.M. Chandrasena said Friday.
Previous counts did not cover the entire island, but the end of a quarter-century civil war in 2009 opened former war zones to wildlife workers.
The information gathered from the survey will be used to devise plans to protect the endangered species, Wildlife Department Director General H.D. Ratnayake said.

Ultimately, federal prosecutors sought 6 years versus a life term for Allen. The New York Times article cited on Reddit doesn’t even mention Allen as being up for a life term. That was the mastermind of the scheme, Lee Farkas. Here’s Allen’s plea agreement.
Roy Brown exhibited remorse and gave back what he stole. The feds have been unable to locate most of the assets stolen by Allen and his co-conspirators.
Did Brown commit a crime? Yes. But why is a man who steals $3 billion somehow worthier of a lesser sentence? Where was the greater harm?
Here’s why Roy Brown says he committed his crime:
A man who said he robbed a downtown Shreveport bank because he was out of a job and hungry has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for first-degree robbery.
Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, head of the Justice Department’s criminal division, said in an e-mailed statement, “Today’s sentence sends a strong message that corporate fraud by senior executives will not be tolerated.” Sean Ragland, 37, a former senior financial analyst at Taylor Bean who also pleaded guilty to the fraud, was sentenced today to three months in prison.
I do get your point. But I feel Paul Allen and his ilk caused much greater harm than Roy Brown ever will.

Ah, cheap Canadian Whiskey. This brand has lovingly been dubbed “Canadian Piss” by my roommates.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen this crap sold in Canada. I guess we just export it to the States. Kinda like how Australians don’t drink Fosters.
The website is misleading, too. It’s supposedly distilled in Ontario, near Blue Mountain, yet the photo shows the Rockies in Western Canada.
Replantation aims to restore the amputated part to its anatomical site, preserving function and appearance. Outcome depends on factors intrinsic to the patient and to the nature of the injury. Young patients who have distal, cleanly amputated extremities have the best return of function; multiple levels of injury, crush, or avulsing injuries have less. Patients must be fully informed about the commitment to rehabilitation and the possibility of multiple surgeries needed for best results.
